Hi, I'm Petey. I am a muttly mix, mostly Black Lab. My mom chose me from the rescue and I'm now living in a very quiet and happy house, just Mom and me, which is perfect. I am very bonded to her. I'm a special dog because..even though I'm not an exciting or energetic or colorful dog...Mom took a chance on me, betting that I would be able to adapt to people. I've overcome a lot to be able to live a long and happy life.

I spent the first six months of my life with 79 other dogs in a very crowded place. Not sure why he had so many of us in such a small house, but it was tough for a little guy like me to survive. I was completely unsocialized when my Mom first met me. I was terrified and anxious and I gulped down any food I saw and drank from every mud puddle ...water and food had been very scarce for me. Though I had never met a human who treated me well, I was completely comfortable with other dogs. I'm a popular dog friend..I love all dogs and all dogs love me.

With a little (temporary) medication to help me calm down and focus, Mom and a trainer taught me to follow some commands. Every dog needs a job...and Mom said my job was to be the dog. But what did that mean and how do I do it? I wanted to be a good dog so badly. Mom took me everywhere with her. I met her friend's dogs who showed me what to do. Those dogs had baskets of toys and I wanted my own basket of toys so Mom got me one. Hooray! I love toys! I learned to lay quietly at her feet. I learned to sit to get treats. I slowly learned that people were not scary or threatening and I worked on approaching them from the front to get pets instead of running away. It's tough to learn to trust but I want to please Mom so I try really hard. New places and new people are very scary to me...I walk the same route in the neighborhood every day. I'm very loving and sweet but I'll always be a timid dog.

After about three years, I finally began to relax and be myself. Now when she skritches my neck and rubs my belly I close my eyes, make grunty noises, and thoroughly enjoy it. Mom plays with me every night, throwing my squeaky balls, laughing as I bound around, teasing me with my favorite bunny toy. I also get to go to the dog park all the time to see my friends. I have fluffy dog beds all over the house but Mom lets me sleep on her bed too. Her bed is so comfy that I snore softly when I sleep there. I am the happiest, luckiest dog in the world! I just love everything about my life now!

And... Mom loves you too, Petey. Very, very much.
