Duke the Miniature Dachshund, the Dog of the Day
Name: Duke
Age: Three years old
Gender: Male Breed: Miniature Dachshund
Home: North London, England, United Kingdom

Duke is a special little dude. Duke is a three-year-old miniature dachshund. Duke's story starts with us in 2017. When I was growing up, we had dachshunds and I have found that they are both a precious and very loyal breed. My Dad knew that I was starting to get the itch to get our boys a dog. A church friend of theirs had mixed breed dachshund puppies that he went to "look at". When he got there, none of the puppies suited his fancy, but then he noticed the father of this litter. He asked the owners how much they'd take for Duke (jokingly, but still very serious ), and they told him since they had no future plans to breed again, my Dad could have him for the same price as the puppies. To make a long story short, my Dad had bought Duke unbeknownst to us, for him to be our Dukey-boy, as we now call him. Duke holds an exceptionally special place in my heart because he was the last gift I ever received from my Dad because my Dad was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer 2 months later, then passed on a few short 8 months after that.

Duke has fallen in with our family right from the start. He may be small, but he is our fierce protector. He lets us know when something isn't right. He will bark and make one think he is a mean machine, but then will back down. He has always been so gentle with our children. Our youngest child would tend to be too rough or play with him in ways other dogs might "snap" at a child. Not Duke! He will give us a look, like "will you please make him stop?!?", but never has there been a bite, a growl, or anything. He is a huge snuggler and wants to be where we are all the time. His favorite place to be is in between me and my husband, under OUR covers (which he is not supposed to do, but sneaks in there when we are not home). He loves belly rubs and back scratches. When he's ready to play, he'll come and stick his nose in our hand and roll over on his back. We'll say, "where's your Kong?", or "go find Kong!", and he will scurry and find it. He loves tug-o-war and fetch. He loves his daily walk around the neighborhood, but he also thinks he owns the whole neighborhood, as he will bark and charge other dogs (no matter how big the other dog is) if they get too close to his people . Duke lives in the North Alabama area with his mom, Dad, and two human brothers.
