Charley the Shih Tzu, the Dog of the Day
Name: Charley
Age: Ten years old
Gender: Male Breed: Shih Tzu
Home: Long Beach, California, USA
Eight years ago I visited my friend Nancye in Arvada, Colorado. She was a Foster Mom for Shih Tzus. I had fallen in love with her doggies and wanted a little guy of my own. As soon as I landed in Denver, we started visiting Foster homes and I finally found Charley. We had to prove we were compatible and so we went on a three-day fishing trip with Nancye and her three dogs in her motorhome. We bonded right away. He flew home with me, under my airline seat, and we've been best buddies ever since. He has the BEST manners and everyone says , "Don't forget to bring Charley with you when you come!" What a love!

I had just made this quilt for my niece and he jumped right up to pose on it as I took a picture of the new quilt.

I've had Charley now for eight years. I have a pool so we have to go "walking" out in the neighborhood every time he needs to go potty. He cracks me up. If he sees me pick up his leash, he runs over to his water bowl and drinks . Then he'll look up at me and I'll say, " Go ahead, get some more", and he'll drink some more. We go through that little routine about 3-4 times. Guess he wants to fill up before he lets it all out! Like a true Shih Tzu, he follows me to every room in the house. He'll wait and rest while I sew or use the computer, or read. He's rarely out of my sight. He LOVES stuffed toys, but never destroys them. His favorite bear has his eyes out because I cut them out so Charley wouldn't be tempted to chew them. He loves to play ball in the park. He loves his long walks. My neighbors come out to see him and he goes up to them and puts up his chin like he is saying, "Yes, I'm cute. You can pet me!" and they do! Everyone knows Charley. It's funny….when your kids are young, you know all the neighbors. Then the kids grow up and you lose contact, especially with the new ones. Now that I have a dog, I know all of my neighbors again. Walking a dog lets people know you are a friendly person.
