Helen the Labrador Retriever, the Dog of the Day
Name: Helen
Age: Eight years old
Gender: Female Breed: Labrador Retriever
Home: Newark, California, USA
Hi, my name is Helen, AKA: Pretty Girl, Big Girl, Sugar Puss, Sugar Plumb, and Sweetie. I sure do have a lot of names. Well, actually I have one more name that I don't hear anymore. And that is Barbie. My mom will tell you all about that. Right now I better go check on my little sister and make sure she isn't getting into trouble. (Over to you, mom!)

Well, I thought Helen had forgotten that at one time she was called "Barbie." We adopted Helen when she was 16 months old from the Labrador Retriever Rescue in Fresno Ca. She had been surrendered without any information. I am always thankful to whoever gave her up because she is now living her best life with us. Just because her first family didn't divulge any info; doesn't mean that I'm left in the dark. Helen stuck to me like glue and was afraid of many things; like water coming out of a hose, anything long and metal (like a baseball bat,) extension cords, quick movements, and going into a bathroom. She also didn't take a shine to our neighbor. He must have reminded her of someone in her past. But now they are best of friends and she likes to sit by him when we watch TV.

Soon after she came to live with us we took a trip up to the mountains to go fishing. I still smile when I think of her expression when she saw a lake. You could tell that it wasn't anything that she had seen before. Helen looked SO surprised, so much water, in one place! It took 5 trips to the lake before she learned to swim. And yes, Helen tried the walking on water trick to no avail. Now she swims but still prefers to run along the shore and just splash in the water. On that first fishing trip; Helen let me know how happy she was. We usually start packing the car to go home long before our departure so we don't have to rush. As soon as Helen saw we were packing the car, she got in the back seat and wouldn't get out. Our other pup was still sniffing around in the woods, but I couldn't get Helen out of the car! It was definitely a, "If you're going, I'm going too!", look on her face. Right then I knew that not only did I love her, but she loved me.

Now Helen doesn't try to chase chipmunks around camp anymore. She likes to sit on the porch and snooze in the shade. She's our pretty-girl, sugar-plumb and we hope we have many more years to cuddle and watch TV with our sweet Helen.
