Sugar the Yorkshire Terrier, the Dog of the Day
Name: Sugar
Age: Fourteen and a half years old
Gender: Female Breed: Yorkshire Terrier
Home: Alabama, USA
Introducing my little "hospice" girl, Sugar. I was at the shelter adopting a senior dog when the veterinarian there suggested another senior. Sugar. They kept her in their office because of all of her medical problems. She was a little too frail to be in a kennel.

Sugar was an owner turn-in, no doubt because of all of the issues. She has a cataract, ear infections, dental problems, but mostly a huge inguinal hernia. It is the size of a golf ball. For a little eight pound girl, that is big. The vet there said it was probably not a good idea to operate on it, due mostly to her advanced age and the size of the hernia. She may not make it off of the operating table.

Needless to say I wanted her, along with the original senior boy that I came for. She did well in the carrier on the way home. Her original name was Sasha, but she is the sweetest thing, so I changed it to Sugar which represents a new beginning for her.

Sugar met her new brother and sisters out in the yard and we all went into the house. She discovered the food and water dishes and pee pee pads. She prefers to go outside to potty. When it is cold or raining I want her to go inside.

The main thing that was needed was to fatten her up. You could see her ribs. Sugar is a good eater so I give her a pouch of Pedigree dog food in the morning and in the evening. She also helps herself to the food in the dog dishes anytime she wants. At night we pass out treats to everyone and she gets in line. She has gained weight.

I took her to my veterinarian and she basically said the same thing as the other. The operation is hard on a healthier dog and if she survived that, the recovery would be very painful.

The goal now is to keep her happy, comfortable and well fed. After all that she has been through, she deserves it.
