Lady
was found two years ago wandering through the bushes of Prospect
Park, Brooklyn. She weighed about two pounds and looked as if she'd
recently had a litter. She was bald and bright red from being covered
with mange and having an allergy to pollen that made her scratch
herself bloody. I took her to the vet to have her fixed up, and knew
on my way home I'd gotten myself a dog.
The Lady is now, two years later, a full four and a quarter pounds,
living every moment like the Manhattanite chihuahua that she is. The
Ren & Stimpy jokes have stopped (only, however, to be replaced by
jokers insisting on mentioning Taco Bell when she walks by - Lady
takes it all in stride, throwing warnings their way - watch out for
your ankles!).
Judging by her teeth, we're estimating she's about eight years old. She
is not aware of her diminutive size, and has no qualms about picking
fights with Rottweilers. She'll act tough and thrives on instilling
fear in the hearts of men, but what she won't tell you is that she's
most happy in her momma's lap. She's the essence of the New York
street vibe, and full of Latin flavor. And she's my best friend.
