These
two campfire girls go by the names of Brindle and Sweetie. When
we go camping, they love to sleep outside in the sun on a blanket.
Throw in a gentle breeze and they are smiling from ear to ear as they
dream. When we go camping they get to see geese and other animals
scurrying around, and they have so many scents they don't know which
one to check out first.
Brindle is a female black and brown (brindle) Japanese terrier mix.
She is fourteen years old and has gone through a great deal to get where
she is today. We found Brindle in an animal shelter in Japan. She had
been passed from two other shelters before landing at the Camp Zama
shelter. Brindle was afraid of her own shadow, literally. She was
thin and frightened to death. With a great deal of patience and
attention, Brindle soon began to trust. Brindle was very brave when
she had to fly in a carrier for such a long period of time when we
returned from overseas, but she did a great job. At the time we
brought Brindle back to the United States, she had a brother by the
name of Vex (a doberman) who was her traveling companion.
Unfortunately, a year after we came home, Vex went to play ball with
his cousins in heaven. Two years after we came back to Illinois, we
moved into our home and knew that Brindle needed a brother or sister.
We contacted the Humane Society and they directed us to Sweetie.
Sweetie is an eight year old, female, Rhodesian Ridgeback/Doberman
mix. Sweetie had been confined in small quarters inside or tied to a
chain outside. Sweetie finds everything new and exciting and she
loves to play, so you can see that being cooped up or tied up just
wasn't a good thing for her. I often wonder how the people that named
Sweetie could have known her temperament so well at such a young age.
Sweetie doesn't care how you are touching her, as long as you are
touching her in some way. She craves attention. Sweetie has a gentle
soul and a fun-loving spirit, and a lot of patience where Brindle is
concerned.
You see, Brindle is diabetic and is almost completely blind and is
extremely hard of hearing. She isn't moving as quickly as she used
to. Would you like to know something else? Sweetie is diabetic, too!
Don't ask me how that happened, we were just lucky, I guess. Brindle
and Sweetie get insulin shots twice a day. Each and every time they
accept their shots without a whimper. I think it takes a special kind
of dog to react as well as they have for years when getting their
shots. We love our two little girls very much. They are very special
to us and to our family.
