About Us
Ash, the Dog of the Day
Name: Ash
Age: Four years old
Gender: Female
Breed: Newfoundland
Home: Montana, USA

Ash's Job is Finding Lost People, she is a search dog with Absaroka Search Dogs.

Ash is a Newfoundland. They are known for their natural rescue tendencies. Historically the breed was used bring heavy fishing nets into shore, off the coast of Newfoundland. Ash has been in search dog training since she was twelve weeks old. She has been exposed to many different situations, sounds, environments, people and other dogs to prepare for her role as a search dog. She is now four years old and is trained to detect human scent under water, snow and rubble, in the wilderness and in urban areas. She can detect tiny particles of skin, hair, sweat and breath vapors from the human body. Hard to imagine, but a dogs sense of smell is so tremendously strong, that it baffles the human mind!

Ash's training took two years at 20-30 hours a week to become fully search ready. She has been on many searches for lost people and has been an important part of every search. Search dogs can help to speed up the search for a lost person, because they can search a large area with the use of the winds and their noses. Sometimes, a search dog's job is to clear an area, so that the search manager can decide where to look next. Sometimes, the dog leads us right to the lost person and that is a wonderful day for the dog and the handler. There are many other fine search dogs in the state of Montana. Of course, since I am her handler, naturally I think she's top dog!

When she isn't working Ash is my in-house companion. She automatically knows when we are going to work. She sees me put my search gear together and she senses the urgency. Ash is a natural water dog. However, she doesn't really enjoy watching people swim. She would rather they stay on the shore. If she has a chance she will round up the swimmers and bring them in.
