My
pet's name is Noodle. He lives in Virginia Beach with my parents.
You may wonder why my dog lives with my parents. Well that's a long
story, but I'll try to condense it for you. All my life I've wanted
a dog but my parents always came up with some excuse not to buy me
one. Finally, when I knew I'd be starting college, I gave up asking.
So I went off to college thinking that I would never get a dog.
Would you like to guess what I got for my birthday when I returned
from my first year in college?
You got it! I received the smallest dog I'd ever seen in my entire
life. Noodle was so small that we could carry him around in a
baseball cap. My parents had gotten Noodle from a breeder who wasn't
happy with having a runt with an overbite "show up"
unexpectedly from her prize-winning Pekinese. So instead of letting
any harm come to Noodle, my grandfather, who had always known how
badly I'd wanted a dog, gave him to my parents. I was smitten from
the first moment I saw Noodle and so were my
very-determined-we-don't-have-time-to-care-for-a-dog parents. He was
so adorable! When we would take him for a walk he would make it half
a block before he would get too tired to continue and we would have
to pick him up and carry him back home. This was especially
embarrassing to my father who often had to deal with the neighbors
yelling remarks like, "That's not what they mean when they say
you should walk your dog!"
Finally it was time for me to leave for college again and I intended
to take Noodle with me. Just as I was packing to leave my dad came
over and said, "Did you know that your mother cried for three
months straight when you left for college?" I didn't know, and
it shocked me. She always seemed okay every time I had talked to her
on the phone. Then Dad dropped the bomb, "I haven't seen your
Mom this happy since before you left for college. I guess that she
likes having someone to take care of again. Something that she can
still be a mother too (I'm an only child)."
That was when I knew that I couldn't take Noodle with me - I
couldn't make my Mom cry again. So I left Noodle with my parents and
he's been there ever since. I still tease her about taking Noodle
with me but she says that she'd hunt me down if I tried. It's the
unconditional love and affection that Noodle gives everyday that make
him the worthy to be Pet of the Day.
