I
met Sophie three years ago, when I strolled into our local Humane
Society and fell instantly in love. Since she had been at the
shelter for almost three months, and it was filling up with many
other dogs, I was told that she would have been put to sleep soon.
Seems not a lot of people are interested in adopting adult (about
three years old) strays. Three years later, Sophie now is my best
friend. She loves to frolic, swim, play with her huge collection of
toys and she lives for our daily hikes. On a good day, she'll find a
deer leg and keep her prize for the rest of the hike. Then she'll
bury it for future hikes.
Sophie also likes to surprise me with her half-chewed butcher bones
in my bed. She can skillfully pull back the bed covers, plant the
nasty treasure, then rearrange the covers so that I will have no clue
what's awaiting me. And to think that such a wonderful friend would
not be with me today if I hadn't ambled in to the Humane Society when
I did.
