Simba
is the ultimate "CyberDog." We adopted him from an ad
I saw in the Internet Classifieds. His previous owners could not keep
him because they were moving to a smaller house. They already had one
Golden when they took in Simba. Simba originally belonged to a family
that was in the throes of a divorce. He was no longer wanted by his
original family, they had moved away and didn't want him back. So,
Simba's AKC papers and birthday and health background are a mystery
to us. They family we got him from only knew him to be around two
years old.
When we went to check Simba out, the first thing my husband did was
make sure he could and liked to play catch. Oh yeah, he loved it. You
will rarely see Simba without that tennis ball in his mouth. It was
love at first site for us. Simba looked just liked our last Golden,
Sheena, who passed away a few years back. We really wanted him. They
were very sad to see him go, but were happy he had a good home.
Simba was also very small and pretty skinny. The vet's scale read 50
pounds. The people we got him from said he was much fatter now than
when they got him. Come to find out, he had whipworm, a microscopic
parasite that prevents dogs from keeping weight on and making them
lose weight and their appetite. We are happy to report that Simba is
in great health now and is starting to fill out.
We have been finding a lot out about Simba in the few months that we
have had him. He is great with our kids! He is very well
mannered and smart. He is also part shadow, as he is forever behind
me, under me, or attached to my hip. He "loves" to go for
car rides. He removes all doubt about who rides "shotgun."
But Simba has been abused in his past, too. He is very afraid of
water. When he sees the garden hose, he bolts into the house. We
think that perhaps he was teased with one or maybe it was a means of
discipline at some point. I did take him to the lake to see if it was
all water that he didn't like. He gingerly stepped in. He liked it.
It wasn't "mean" water. When Simba is bad, you know, he
chewed up the kid's pool or one of their toys, he knows he did wrong.
I just bend over, pick up the object in question, and Simba is down,
cowering, waiting for me to beat him. You can just tell he is
prepared for the worst. But I don't, won't, couldn't, wouldn't lay a
hand on that sweet face. I feel sorry for the people that did. They
need help.
So, this is a story with a happy ending. Simba is the best dog in the
whole world. We couldn't have asked for a better companion for our
family. In fact, we are thinking about adopting another Golden to
keep Simba company. You just can't have too much love.
