Her
name is Aspen Chance, but she's called Aspen for short. She was
given up at the shelter. Reason? Because she's deaf! She was
considered untrainable because of her deafness. She was one and half
years old at the time when it was discovered she's deaf. It's a
"common knowledge" with the dog people, that deaf dogs are
"aggressive." It's a myth, facts about deaf dogs can be
found in an excellent book called, "Living with a Deaf
Dog" by Susan Cope.
Aspen was wanted by me, because no one wanted a deaf dog. I just had
to adopt her. There have been no regrets at all. She is the most
polite dog I've ever had. She's not a food hound or a furniture
chewer. She had almost no bad habits. The only bad habit she has is
flinging her bowl across the room when she's upset that I'm leaving
her home alone. That's her way of communicating.
Aspen is very brilliant and a real sweetheart. She can communicate
with her eyes. She would look at a ball and look at me and that would
be her way of saying "my ball is stuck under the table, help
me." She has a way of using her eyes as pointing her finger at
something or someone, she does it very well. She knows over 20 signs
in ASL (American Sign Language). She delights to be with deaf people
just watching their hands flying as they communicate. In the
evenings, she likes to curl up in my lap, all 40 lbs. of her. She has
been very easy to train.
Aspen also does flyballing and some herding on the side. She loves
flyballing due to her obsession with balls. She also loves to stop
and actually smell the flowers. I've never seen a such thing before.
Maybe that's her hint for me to "stop and smell the roses?"
Maybe I should have called her Rose...
