Ollie
entered his humans into the world of Golden Retrievers. Named for
Oliver North, he has remained a paper shredder to this day. What an
incredibly smart guy he is, falling in the Canine Genius range on the
Doggie IQ Test! Ollie has also appeared in Time, Newsweek, and Reader's
Digest magazines in an ad for the Pharmaceutical Research &
Manufacturers of America. Who better than a Golden to help someone from
being depressed? That's why he's so perfect for an ad about an illness,
like depression, being treatable.
Ollie's favorite thing in the world is people. He loves everyone, but
especially kids. The day we went to bring him home, we saw lots of lovely
little puppies, all with different colored yarn around their
necks. We didn't know which one had been selected for us, but the first
guy to come up to the wires of his kennel to investigate us had a piece
of red yarn around his neck. It turned out that this guy was our little
Ollie. While he was the runt of the litter, he was the little lover of
the bunch, preferring people to being with his brothers and sisters.
Ollie has remained that little lover, not even growling back at a dog
even if they're growling at him. He never has a harsh word for anyone or
any creature.
Ollie's next favorite thing to people is playing ball. He can hold four
in his mouth at a time. He loves to play flyball, and retrieve balls
that have been tossed out with a miniature lacrosse stick for him. We
like to use this stick as it keeps us from having to handle the
slimy-covered balls that he returns with in his mouth!
Unfortunately, Ollie was recently (in June) diagnosed with
lymphosarcoma, a form of cancer. On July 3, 1998, we did a very brave thing for a very
brave soul. Ollie's illness had been found too late for it to respond to treatment. You
know, these Golden saints hide so much of their pain from us to protect us, that
by the time we learn of their problem, it's often too late. So, we allowed Ollie
to be out of his pain forever. While we stroked Ollie and told him how much we loved
him, and how good he would soon be feeling, our veterinarian gave him medicine
that allowed him to die peacefully.
Please go and spend some time visiting Ollie's
pictorial history.
It shows some of the many special tricks that he could do, some even learned on his own!
