She
weighs 90 pounds, thinks she weighs 6! She loves to jump up
in my lap and lick my face when I get home. Her idea of heaven is
to lay on the floor and have her tummy scratched. When our parrot starts
to yell, Chloe joins in singing at the top of her voice. It's a riot.
Chloe was my birthday gift from my wife in June, 1996. She
is an English Bull Mastiff, a breed derived from the Bulldog.
Originally, they were bred to be watchdogs due to their size, an
advantage they had over the Bulldog. Chloe, however, would just as
soon "kiss them" than "kill them." Hence, not a great watchdog!
The other Mastiff alternative is the Bordeaux, or French Mastiff.
"Hooch" in the "Turner and Hooch" movie was a Bordeaux. They
slobber! The English is a dry-mouth breed so Chloe doesn't slobber.
Chloe is into
communication. She will stare at me until I stare back, then start
very low growls or "ruffs" in order to converse. Any sign of
appreciation or attention at that point results in my lap being
filled with 90 pounds of loving dog. She has an ornery streak and
loves to chew up boxes of Kleenex. She knows its wrong and, when
caught, puts herself into her cage and closes the door behind her.
When she feels she has been repentant enough, she opens her cage and
rejoins society. Chloe is a love... and my best friend.
