My
name is Dante. I'm a retired racing greyhound and I'm seven years
old. I raced at the Plainfield Connecticut Track until I was four; so
did my sister, Tosca, who just turned three. I guess that means I
retired about the same time she was born (how's that for doggie
math?)
I live in Philadelphia, PA, with my mom, dad, Tosca, and my brother
Kermie (he's a cockatiel; he's adopted too and even older than me!) I
am enjoying retirement big time and I love to lie around on the bed.
I'm happiest when I get to go on long walks, and in the summer when
it's hot, I jump into the public fountains in the city. Boy is that
fun! On the other hand, I'm pretty happy just lazing around, which I
get to do a lot! I still like running, especially on the beach (where
I can hear the wind in my ears, feel the soft sand underfoot, and
best of all, get to chase all kinds of birds), or with my sister in
the park. I'm not allowed off my leash unless it's in an enclosed
space, because I'm a sight hound and my instinct to chase is
incredibly strong. I love chasing things and will run after something
even if mom and dad are yelling at me not to, so they make sure that
when I'm loose it's in a safe place.
They love me a lot. Did you know that I'm descended from one of the
oldest dog breeds known? My ancestors go back to ancient Egyptian
times. But I'm a modern dog--I'm extremely affectionate and love
people and children. Just pet me, and I'll lean on you and then
follow you anywhere. I'm even known to smile. Yep, that's right. When
I'm happy to see someone, I'll bare my teeth and show a sort of Mona
Lisa Smile. So if you ever meet a greyhound, watch for that smile...
