Chaucer
is named after Geoffrey Chaucer, author of "The
Canterbury Tales." She is so named because we live on Canterbury
St. When we moved into a home, after being in an apartment for years,
we knew we had to have a dog. We checked the local Humane Society and
were amazed to find this boxer there, looking curiously up at us as
all the dogs around her barked their heads off. Many others wanted
her, and a drawing was held. We were the lucky winners.
After she had her shots and was spayed, we brought
her home. Our minds were made up that she was going to be an outside
dog. Unfortunately, we have a glass back door, and she would just
quietly sit there looking in, her sad face pleading to be in our
company. Well, it was too much for us, so we let her live inside with
us. We've gone through a few bottles of carpet cleaner since then,
but she is finally getting housebroken.
Chaucer loves to run. She is a hard dog to walk,
because she will drag you around to investigate everything under the
sun, especially dogs and children. She loves children (although most
kids don't like wet, slobbery faces). She normally sleeps on a
blanket in our bedroom, but when we tend my sister-in-law's baby, she
sleeps right next to the crib all night. Even if we put the baby on
the floor in a car seat, Chaucer will loyally lay down right next to
him.
Her favorite things to do are catch her rubber hot
dog, which she is pretty good at, and chase ducks and geese in the
city park. She will run and run and run after them all day if we let
her, but sometimes she forgets to come back! The ducks are pretty
safe though, as Chaucer will not go in any water, as most boxers
won't. Chaucer also likes the occasional wrestling match with me when
she gets really hyper She also likes to stick her head in when you
are taking a shower and lick the water off of the side of the tub.
She rarely drinks out of her dish, but she'll drink anything that is
flowing or splashing. She rarely barks, only when she sees other dogs
outside. She loves to stand on her hind legs, put her front paws on
the windowsill, and investigate the neighborhood. She'll do that for
up to thirty minutes straight.
