I
found Fred on 5/2/99. The vet and I agree that he is a mixed-breed
teenager, but beyond that we know nothing about his age or
background. Fred lives in Walnut Creek, California with me (Bobbie),
my husband Dick, and our other four dogs (three cairn terriers and a
bearded collie).
I first spotted the small ball of fluff who is now our Fred six
months ago in the midst of heavy traffic on a busy multi-lane road. I
got out of the vehicle I was riding in as fast as I could and somehow
managed to get to him and scoop him up before he was run over. The
little guy had no identification and I was unable to find his owner,
so my husband and I named him Fred and welcomed him into our family.
This seemed like the most natural thing in the world to do, since
both of us had already fallen in love with him. When I found Fred he
weighed only eight pounds, his nails curled under his feet, and his
mouth was full of infection. I clipped Fred's nails and took him to a
veterinarian, who gave him all his shots, put him on antibiotics, and
pulled nine of his teeth. Now Fred weighs almost nine pounds and is
still gaining. He is a healthy and happy member of our five-dog
family, a gentle, affectionate, good-natured, well-behaved fellow who
loves to eat and go for walks and always seems to have a smile on his
face. When I tell people how we got Fred, they usually say that he is
a very lucky dog. I always respond that we are every bit as lucky as
he is. And that's the truth.
Fred has his
own home page
with more info and wonderful photos.
