This
past Easter we had to put Taffy, our beloved companion of
eighteen years, to sleep. We were devastated and didn't know how we
would ever get over the loss. Then, a week later, a miracle happened.
I was reading the pet adoption ads in the Los Angeles Times and an ad
for Maggie leaped off the page at me.
Maggie is a rescue dog who has had a very hard life. Before she came
to us she had been abandoned as a pup. A nice family adopted her, but
less than a year later they were killed in an automobile accident.
She was taken in by a rescue group, and over a six month period spent
two months in a kennel, then was fostered by two separate families.
By the time she came to live with us she was confused and uncertain.
However, she seemed to immediately understand that we were her true
new family. Maggie's presence has healed us. She is not a replacement
for our lost Taffy, but a special, loving being who gives totally of
her love and intelligence. Just looking at her beautiful gaze in this
photo, her empathy and understanding become clear. Maggie needed us,
but we needed her just as much. We will never stop being grateful for
her presence in our lives.
