Gideon Itza Rion, CDX, CGC is a three and a half year old German
Shepherd from Orlando, Florida. Gideon is a working dog; he
participated in the search and rescue operations last March 1998 here
in Florida after tornadoes ripped through the area. Gideon also was
my "furred walker" during the months of September and
October while I was recuperating from respiratory arrest. Trained as
a mobility assistance dog, not only did he support my weight and
steady me as I walked, but if I dropped something he would pick it
up. I had trained Gideon for these skills for obedience
demonstrations only at schools, nursing homes, and churches, not
knowing that I would need his assistance for myself.
Gideon and his mate, Kira, have also been used for catalog
advertisements and television commercials. His face has helped to
advertise dog supplies, has graced insurance and banking pamphlets,
and helped to sell popcorn on television. Gideon is my "right
hand man," my protector, and most importantly... my friend. I
have been training dogs since 1974 and this is by far the best dog I
have ever had the pleasure of knowing. When we first got Gideon at
five and a half months, he had been kenneled... a lot... so he was
afraid of everything. He didn't even know how to climb a stair - I
had to coax him up three steps. He was so afraid he was a text book
case of a fear biter. He was dog aggressive and people aggressive.
Gideon is now the perfect example what time, patience, and training
can do for an aggressive dog. Gideon has many talents, and seems to
do each of them well. He will never be an Obedience Trial Champion
(OTCH) as he likes to play too much while working, but he has his CDX
and will show in Utility this spring. I love this dog, he is very
laid back and reserved - but if need be, he has a bark like a lion
and teeth to match. When I was searching for a name for my kennel,
nothing seemed to fit. Until a friend, watching Gideon do his bite
work for Schutzhund training, remarked... Look... It's a lion!! Thus
the name... Itza Rion Kennels. Thank you for allowing me to brag
about this dog. Gideon is a rare find. I am very lucky to have him
for a friend.
