The
regal animal pictured above came into our lives two years ago. He
was a shy battered skeleton of an animal that had been severely
abused. He was terrified of linoleum floors, the TV, stairs, raised
voices, and any person whom would attempt to approach him. His
distant gaze was filled with intelligence, but buried under
overwhelming sadness. For the first couple of weeks he would try
anything to get away from you.
In the months that followed his arrival he was showered with
unconditional love and patience from both my then seven-year-old son
and myself. Never under estimate the power of compassion and
kindness. This once timid dog is now the most loyal, protective,
obedient, playful and loving animal I have ever had the privilege of
knowing. Dakota is not an aggressive dog, but he is protective and
not particularly outgoing or accepting with adults whom he does not
know. He seems to have an acute sense of those whom I welcome and
those that I do not. He is our guardian on camping trips and when we
are hiking in the wilderness. He never goes out of sight, even when
off leash, and when strangers approach he assumes his position by my
side without being asked. He is trained on hand signals and holds an
AKC canine good citizen certificate. He aids in the education of
children by joining me on my trips to elementary schools to educate
on the responsibilities of pet ownership and animal safety practices
for young children.
When I think of the horribly abusive life this wonderful dog has
lived, it still brings tears to my eyes. His loving presence has
brought my son and I so much joy and a wonderful feeling of security
in our home.
