About Us
Tater, the Dog of the Day
Name: Tater
Age: Three years old
Gender: Male Breed: Jack Russell Terrier
Home: Seattle, Washington, USA

He is a three-year-old short haired, short legged Jack Russell living in Seattle Washington. Tater has always been a loving dog, but his protectiveness of our toddler has been nothing short of amazing. Our son Nicholas would love to get into all sorts of trouble, but Tater prevents that. He uses the novel method of washing Nicholas's face with his tongue to herd him away from anything Tater deems dangerous. As you can see in the attached picture, it works :-).

Most of Tater's life is spent in search of pleasure. He finds it by snuggling in the bed with us at night, greeting strangers with a jump and a lick during walks, and cuddling for hours with whomever is willing to pet him. He is very active, though: recently, he decided to teach Nicholas how to play tug-of-war. The two tussle over toys constantly. Tater will sometimes get Tyche, our Pomeranian, to drag him on his back by refusing to let go of the toy they are playing with until she gets completely frustrated. At that point, he lies down rolls over, and enjoys a free trip around the room -- in short jerks, punctuated by yips and growls.

His most distinguishing characteristic, though, is his lovingness. His first loyalty is to my husband -- he is first and foremost a Daddy's dog. Second is our son, whom he clearly views as his responsibility. For the rest of us, he brings joy and affection in equal measure, patiently standing still and letting a girl in a wheelchair stroke his fur at Pike Market, licking the hand of a homeless man on one of our long daily walks, bowling Nicholas over to say hello when our boy awakens in the morning, and coming over to curl at my feet and lick my hand whenever he thinks maybe I have had a tough day. He is a wonderful, wonderful dog and brightens every day that we are lucky enough to have him in our family.
