This
is Mona - she was (at the time of this picture) eight years old.
She earned her Novice Agility title during the summer of 1998. That
same year she also had a life changing "accident." She was
shot by a hunter in our own backyard woods. She and her sister Sandy
(yellow lab) took off out of the van like they sometimes do. I was
close behind calling after them. Even though there is no leash law in
my rural town, I do not let them run free. After fifteen minutes of
calling I heard two very loud distinct gunshots. They were awfully
close I thought to myself, but not thinking any one would ever shoot
my dogs with me out calling them I continued to look. About twenty
minutes later Sandy came home. No Mona. She was usually the first to
come. Now I was worried. It was dark so I got in my van and took a
ride around the neighborhood. By the time I got back my husband was
frantic, Mona was home and she had been shot through the left front
leg. Luckily I am a Veterinary Technician, and I rushed her to my
hospital where the doctor took her into surgery and removed her leg.
This has not kept my courageous girl down. Four months later she was
doing agility again, swimming, keeping her brother and sister in line
and retrieving anything we throw. She also is a therapy dog now and
loves the attention! She is one truly special dog!!!
