My
dog Sabre is a male Brindle Great Dane. He is four and a half years old, is
35 inches at the shoulder and weighs 150 pounds. Sabre possesses all the great
qualities that a fantastic dog
should have. He is well behaved, affectionate, intelligent, loyal and has no
bad habits. He never messes up in the house and has never chewed anything that
didn't belong to him. If he wants something that he's not sure he can have he
asks for it first. He will actually bark at it but not touch it unless you say
he can have it. He is so popular that where ever we go he makes friends with
everybody.
When people first meet Sabre they are usually intimidated by him because of
his great size. However, once they get to know him they wind up loving him
unconditionally. I'd even go as far as to say that he even has more friends
than I do. I moved a year ago and in both neighborhoods most of the local
people would actually come and knock on my door and ask to visit and play with
Sabre. I have never even heard of a dog that wasn't on TV that was as popular
as he is. There is no specific age of people who fall in love with Sabre
either. The age range is from two years - 85 yrs. The young as well as the old are
just crazy about him. As a true testament of his charm every mail carrier that
we've ever had loves him too.
He is very friendly. He never barks or jumps on people unless they want him
to. He plays games and does 26 tricks. He's the smartest dog that I have ever
known. He is also very loyal and protective. If it looks as if someone is
getting too aggressive and grabs a person or hits them Sabre will defend the
victim. He will first stand up on his hind legs and jump up and down by the
aggressor and bark. If that doesn't stop them he'll grab their shirt sleeve
and tug on it. If they still don't stop he'll grab their arm and try to pull
them away without causing physical damage. If they still persist he will bite
them. He goes only as far as they do. He gives them every opportunity to stop
before he goes to the next stage.
In addition, Sabre is very gentle and calm. He absolutely loves children too.
They can do anything to him and he acts just as sweet as could be. You could
kick that dog and he wouldn't bite you. However, if you kick anybody else
he'll defend that person to the end. He used to play Frisbee with a little five
year old girl all the time. She would throw it and he would retrieve it and
drop it at her feet. He knew not to grab it roughly. Although if you want to
play roughly he's happy to oblige. He always seems to be very conscious of his
size and practically tiptoes around children so as not to hurt them. However,
nowadays when we play Frisbee with him we use the lid of a rubber 30 gallon
garbage can because it's the only Frisbee that will last more than ten minutes
after he gets a hold of it.
Sabre is highly intelligent to say the least. He will perform any of his 26
tricks either by verbal commands or just by hand signals. He makes people
laugh because he has this favorite blanket that he drags around like Lioness
in Peanuts. When he lays down to go to bed at night he tugs on his blanket and
makes these little woof sounds until you cover him up with it. When you try to
wash the blanket he tries to wrestle it away from you all the way to the
washer. Once you finally get it into the wash he waits in front of it and then
dryer until it's done. He then carries it back to his bed. He is a riot.
Everyone laughs when we do this Robert Dinero bit together. I'll say, "You
talkin to me?" and then he barks in this really quiet and funny way in reply.
If you pretend to box with him he'll rear up on his hind legs and bob up and
down in front of you while waving his paws in your face. Then he'll dodge and
duck your play punches. If you pretend to shoot him with a play gun he'll bark
loudly at it and bite at it very gently as he play growls.
If you ask Sabre, "Where's the bad guy?", he will thoroughly patrol any area
looking for him. Whether in or outside the house he'll run wildly barking in
an intimidating manner trying to find him. When outside he even tries to climb
the trees and will actually bite some bark off if we tell him that "the bad
guy" is up there.
The larger picture shows him on patrol looking for the "bad guy." The smaller
shows him taking a nap with bunny slippers on. He just lets us do anything to
him. As you can plainly see Sabre is quite a character. We love him very much.
It seems as though everybody that has ever gotten to know him does too. After
all what's not to love?
