Shiva
is the most amazing dog that I have ever known! She came to us by
way of Enid, Oklahoma, where my youngest son Alexander was attending
college. She simply showed up on campus one day, tired and bedraggled,
with swollen and bloody feet. She obviously had been on the move for
several days, if not weeks. She was ungroomed and had fleas and ticks
and was very lean from hunger. The college kids immediately took to her
and began to care for her, hiding her from the college authorities by
taking turns keeping her in their rooms. Taking her to the vet, they
learned that she was approximately three months old. Shiva loved college
life, and she acquired an appetite for pizza, Chinese cuisine, French
fries, popcorn, and various assorted snack foods. Alexander was lucky
enough to have been the student selected to take Shiva home from Enid.
His parents immediately fell in love with her. She is energetic and full
of life; she loves to play "tag" with us, with our poodle
Beau, or with our next-door-neighbor's Black Lab Maddie. Using her
shepherding dexterity, she manages with a "head-and-shoulders
fake" to change directions instantaneously and get around her
opponent. She loves going for walks, especially in Boyle Park, her
"favorite place." She sees so many interesting things there:
various birds such as red-headed woodpeckers, bluejays, or crows, and
small wildlife such as rabbits and squirrels. Shiva has even learned to
look up into the trees to see if she can spot a squirrel scurrying
about. While walking in her favorite place, she likes to investigate the
brush, and she sometimes returns from these excursions with vegetation
in her coat and mud on her feet. She has learned that when she is told
"Go wash your feet," she is to wade out into the creek and
wash the mud off. Shiva often goes with us in the car when we go
shopping, and it is not unusual for us to find her sitting behind the
steering wheel when we return to the car, looking as if she expects us
to let her drive home. Sometimes I feel as if she could learn to talk
with us with just a little practice. She is an utterly amazing dog!
