About Us
Mystic Lord Alfred Tennyson, the Dog of the Day
Name: Mystic Lord Alfred Tennyson
Age: Eight months old
Gender: Male Breed: Golden Retriever
Home: Owings Mills, Maryland, USA

On May 31, 1999, about a year after our Golden Ollie earned his Golden wings, we welcomed another Golden guy to the Land of PureGold. In special tribute to Ollie, our new fellow has been named after the famous poet, Lord Alfred Tennyson ("Alfie"), for it was he who wrote these important words: "Tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all." Alfie is a sweetheart and is simply living life to its fullest. He is also doing Great with our Golden darlin' Darcy, so wanting to follow in everything that she does. I can tell that she is eager for Alfie to grow so that he can become a play buddy. And, luckily Darcy is being very tolerant of Alfie's insistence on taking all of her things.

This incredibly moving picture of Alfie was taken on August 4, 1999 at Chancellor Gardens, a truly lovely assisted living home in Howard County. On this very exciting day, Alfie became the youngest member of the Pets on Wheels league in Howard County, Maryland. You can see more of our Alfie's volunteer adventures at his Pets on Wheels Volunteer Puppy page to see how he has helped to lick loneliness. This program, which uses cold noses to warm hearts, is featured throughout the many counties in our state of Maryland. And, Alfie's premier visit earned him cover status for the Fall 1999 Pets on Wheels Newsletter!

I should tell you that young pups are usually not utilized for such visitations. Typically, more mature and settled dogs are involved in such a program. But puppies hold a very special appeal for old and young alike. Just look at the face of Alfie's companion, Miss Francis, a wheelchair-bound, visually impaired resident. She was just so thrilled to have Alfie in her arms, hugging and stroking him as much as she could. I don't think she could get enough of him, though. Be sure not to miss our Little Lord Alfie's pictorial history as his glorious Golden life unfolds. And, see him continue to lend his love to others, as we return to Chancellor Gardens so that his 'senior' friends may share in watching him grow and mature.
