Both
these shelties, sitting in a pile of similarly colored fall
leaves, are the highlight of my life and my noble companions. Una,
Abbey's aunt, is the extrovert with a special affinity for children
and cats. Upon approaching either one, she'll sit and raise her nose
singing songs for all. She'll happily await her reward while
nervously assessing the reactions of her audience. She is a true
character! Abbey is a bit more shy, constantly looking to Una for
safety assurances. I've never had an animal so attached to me, her
mommy. She always hides from this scary world behind my leg. I love
her infinitely and want to shelter her from all the harm that could
possibly reach her.
Unfortunately, even a mother's love cannot protect a beloved pet from
cancer. Ironically, both Una and Abbey together have cancer and a
rather grim prognosis for both. During this time, I'll sleep with
them on the kitchen floor to show them I'm there - always. Although
their spirits are high, the chemotherapy drains their energy. I don't
want them to suffer, but I will go broke to extend any quality life
they may have left. This is my final formal tribute to each of them.
I love them both with all my heart!
