This
is Mateo, my dog. Mateo is an eight-month-old yellow Labrador
retriever that thinks that George, my wife's twelve year old son, is
his pet! We live in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia (South America), on
the shores of the Caribbean ocean. Mateo wakes me up every morning at
5:30 AM and takes me for "a little jog" along the beach
where he meets his friend Tommy, a lovely one and a half year old
Dalmatian. On Sundays, Mateo joins us for some sailing around the bay
in the Sunfish. His favorite spot is next to the mast, where he curls
up and sleeps. When the sailboat sways too much, he raises his head
to make sure everything is all right before resuming his "sweet
dreams." When we swim and play with the ocean waves, he comes
and swims with us. And if we stay and talk, he stays next to the
group, just like one of us. In the neighborhood, Mateo is everyone's
friend, especially all the little kids. When Mateo and I wait near
the entrance of the supermarket store for my wife to do the shopping,
he wins everyone's attention with that "sweet angel" look
of his, and all stop by to pet him. Something funny about him is that
every time he sees us brushing our teeth, he sits by us with that
imploring look of his as if asking "What about me?". If we
pretend to ignore him he lifts his leg up and pushes us until we
brush his teeth. Mateo is a very special dog and has become the
center of our lives and the center of our conversations.
