Bushey
came to stay with the Thomas family in 1989 after spending
several months living in the bushes in their yard. He was probably
around three years old at the time. He had become a wild dog and had
been obviously tortured in some way as evidenced by his disturbed
behavior throughout his later life; for example, his tremendous fear of
heights. His fur was matted and caked with filth. His nose was cut from
cans he dug from the trash. He was very skittish, but also quite
aggressive. Still, there was something very dear about him. It became
clear right from the very beginning that he was in love with my momma,
who was in her 70s at the time. She was the only person he would let
approach him. From the time they got acquainted and onward, he never
left her side if he could help it. When momma was away, sick in the
hospital - Bushey aged tremendously. When momma returned home, Bush hung
on happily for another year-and-a-half until the end on the morning of
March 24th of this year when he died. There are many reasons I called
this beautiful dog "Buddha" instead of his adopted name. He
was a teacher of many things by example. He taught us patience, kindness
and joy. He taught us discipline. He taught us to be rooted in reality.
He reminded us of danger and the perseverance to spite it. He provided
us with many blessings and protection, but most of all he showed us the
way to love. He was the Buddha, our Bushey. And he will be terribly
missed.
