Dust
Mop has been given this name for a very obvious reason! We found
her abandoned at the home we rented in Honduras. Her parents had been
brought to this home from Cuba when their owner had been there on
business. Unfortunately, he became very ill with Alzheimer's and was no
longer able to care for the home or the animals. When his daughter moved
him to her home, she left poor little Dust Mop alone to fend for
herself. It was two weeks from the time they left the house until we
moved in. When we found her, she was starving and her coat was a mess.
Even bathing her did not solve the problem and I ended up having to cut
all of her hair off. When I freed her from all of the burs (which were
so entangled in her fur that she could hardly walk!) she just kept
kissing me to say, "Thank You!"
She has been on many adventures with us. When we later moved to the
Island of Roatan in the Bay Islands, Dust Mop went with me and the
furniture to the island on a barge. It was very rough seas that day and
the Captain exclaimed, "That dog, she be a vomitin' mahn." But
she was a little trooper and behaved so well, even though she was very
sea sick.
We were only the island a short time when we discovered there were very
few homes available to rent, so, we lease/managed a small hotel and
restaurant. Dust Mop would entertain our guests with her
"singing" and happy personality. However, we were there just a
short time when the island was hit by Hurricane Mitch. 17,000 people
died in Honduras from that storm, but the Lord protected us on our
island and not one life was lost there. The storm devastated the tourist
industry and did quite extensive damage to the hotel and so we returned
to the States, and of course, Dust Mop flew over with us.
We were only in the Oklahoma City area a few weeks when in May of last
year, the apartment we were living in was hit by the tornado that was a
mile wide. It was so powerful that nothing was left but small
toothpick-sized splinters and rubble. Fourteen of the 41 fatalities
occurred in our apartment complex. Dust Mop has not only been like our
baby, she has been our constant companion through all the hard times
that we faced of losing everything in the world, that is, except each
other. She always seems to know when we have needed extra love and
encouragement. She has always been there for us and this is what makes
her so very special.
