Upon
my retirement from the U.S. Army in January 1987, and after losing
our family pet in Italy, we went to the SPCC in Dover, Delaware and ask
about getting a small, female dog. The lady working indicated they (the
SPCC), had just had a premature litter of pups born, with only one
female that survived. She informed me that "personal care and
loving affection," would be required for this pup to survive and
that only time would tell who and when someone could have the pup in
question. We (my wife and two sons) remained in weekly communication
with the SPCC and somehow convinced them that we were "the right
family for this pup." We brought her home in March of '87, and she
has provided this family of two growing boys, a wonderful mother, and an
"old Army Sergeant," many, many minutes, hours, days, and
years of very blessed moments.
Since then Shadow has undergone surgery twice to remove cancer growths
and has recovered very well both times. Shadow was trained by the boys.
One trick was teaching her to sit in the begging position while being
carried around in public. She usually is the topic of conversation when
she gets to go "bye, byes." Needless to
say, Shadow is considered to have been "heaven sent!"
