One
day, not so many years ago, I visited an animal shelter with no
specific plans to adopt a pet. The dogs were housed in cages and seemed
very distressed. In the last cage, I saw Pushkin - matted and soiled
from her weeks on the street - but still seemingly determined to face
her ordeal with composure and quiet dignity. She came over and looked me
steadily in the eye... and seemed to see straight into my heart. After a
long session at an obliging groomer, Pushkin emerged in her full glory.
She is a beautiful dog... and a true friend.
