My
dog's name is Gwaii (Gwhy), it is a Haida word meaning wonder. I used
to live in a place called Gwaii Honis and that means Place of Wonder,
(now I live in Peterborough Ontario) so when we got her I thought Gwaii
was the perfect name!
We got Gwaii from the Lakefield Animal Welfare Society, when she was
four months old, (now she's three) and her previous owners had deprived
her of food and had beaten her. When I first got her she was very
frightened of anyone and everyone, she especially had been afraid of
"big men." For the first few days, she would hide under the
beds or the tables, and was very shy. She gradually grew out of her
fears and is very brave to this day.
Gwaii is a mutt, I've researched and researched and I am now lead to
believe that she is part border collie and part Nova Scotia Duck Tolling
Retriever.
Ever since Gwaii was young she has had major food problems. For
example, if you gave her a pizza crust one night, when you go to bed you
would find it under your pillow, or in your shoe, on the window sill, in
the laundry hamper and other places like that! I have thought about
taking Gwaii into old folks homes and organizations like that and I
still do, but maybe when she's a little older!
Every night when I'm in bed and see my Gwaii on the end of the covers I
think to myself how lucky I am to have such a great friend, I want
everybody to see, just for one day, what a great dog she is.
