Molly
Waverly lives with five Benedictine sisters, and says that she has
never regretted joining the convent because she loves having a fixed
daily schedule. She always knows what is coming next: when we get to the
last sentence of Evening Prayer, she runs to the kitchen and barks for
dinner. She always prefers being with the group, and attends prayers
religiously.
Her parents were a chocolate lab and a German wirehair, which makes her
a "German chocolate", although when we allow her coat to grow
to full length, she looks most like a Briard with "natural"
ears. Molly was adopted through a local shelter, and when we took her to
our vet of thirty years, he said, "And does this little dog know
that she has fallen into doggie heaven?"
Molly says that she does, although she believes that it is what life was
intended to be-having five faithful handmaidens to wait on her. She,
like all our former dogs, knows exactly what she can get from each
person-walks, car rides, toast crusts, and lots of affection. She loves
everyone - except her cousin Bitsy who sometimes comes for sleepovers -
and like her deceased uncle Campbell, gives ingratiating toothy
"smiles" to people she particularly wants to impress such as
the groomers and the vet. She is very curious about new things appearing
in the house, especially if they might have food value. She stands up at
the kitchen counter while we are eating in the dining room and
"fishes" with one front leg for anything in her reach. She
once ate an entire pecan pie (with no adverse effects) much to the
dismay of the person whose "birthday pie" it was. Her
household duties include protecting the house from being carried off by
predatory chipmunks and waking up late sleepers on Saturday mornings.
