Schenka,
whose name comes from the German word, Geschenk, meaning
"gift," is a rescue dog of sorts. After spending her first
five years with a smoker and an invalid, she was returned to her breeder
in a very overweight and out-of-shape condition. She came into our home
about a year later, a month after we had lost another dog who had meant
a great deal to us.
After taking her through dog obedience classes, I started taking her to
work with me. I am an elementary school counselor in a rural school in
Idaho. She has been a great asset to me at work. Kids with whom I had
been trying to make a connection for over a year, suddenly opened up to
me with wide smiles and sparkling eyes. Other kids who came to my
office, in tears about a tragedy in their life, found comfort in giving
her a hug. She accompanies me into the classrooms, staying on a down
(sometimes snoring!) during my lessons.
Being a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, she is sturdy enough to take some of the
not-so-gentle handling of the fourth-grade boys, yet short enough not to
frighten even the pre-school children. She will let any child give her a
pat. In fact, at the beginning of the year, I even teach a lesson using
her as the main object. The "gift" that she and many other
dogs give us, is unconditional love. From there I talk about how all of
us are worthy of receiving love, just because we are human beings. She
is a vital part of our school-loved by both children and adults.
