This
is Grant beginning another day in southern California. Although
swimming may be his favorite activity, eating and retrieving tennis
balls, particularly out of the water, rank as close seconds. Grant has
been in our family for four years. Earlier, we adopted a young black
lab mix from the Humane Society in Waterloo, IA, to replace a very
old, but beloved, lab that passed away. Our new dog had several
obedience problems, so I thought a second dog would give her
companionship and have a calming effect. Our vet knew a family who was
looking to give away their dog, so we went to visit them. Grant was
two years old at the time, and during our entire visit, he circled the
sofa on which we sat and growled at me each time he passed. During our
conversation, one of the owners commented, "He is too good a dog
to put down." Fearful of what might happen if we didn't take him,
we left with Grant in spite of his surly attitude towards me. Since
then, however, both dogs have turned into very affectionate, but
spoiled, pets.
Three years ago we both accepted new positions in San Diego so we
spent five days on the road on the "great car ride." The first
day in our new home, we let Grant jump into the pool where he swam for
six hours. At first, we tried unsuccessfully to "rescue" him
thinking he didn't know how to get out of the pool, but we soon
realized that he loved the water and wanted to keep swimming. He is so
obsessed about swimming that even today when we try to pull him out he
just swims away. Of the two dogs, Grant is the more loyal, and when in
the house he follows me everywhere I go, even to the bathroom. When
house guests arrive, he greets them with excitement and as a new
potential for throwing tennis balls. After they sit down, he drops a
slimy ball at their feet and stares at them with cocked ears waiting
for it to be thrown. Grant has a wonderful disposition and acts as
though every moment is a new adventure. It seems the only time his
tail isn't moving is when he closes his big amber eyes for a nap.
