This
is Bear. Bear is a eighteen-month-old black lab. Bear is a cadaver dog.
Bear is able to locate drowning victims, by smelling the water. He has
been able to locate two people that have drowned. This sounds like a
gruesome task for a pet. Here in Louisiana the water is so murky that
you can not see anything once you go down six inches from the surface.
Before Bear started working with the local fire dept, the fire dept
divers had to rely on witness testimony as to where the person was
last seen on the surface of the water. Most of the time the witness is
so distraught he/she is unable to remember the last place the person
was seen. With the use of Bear as a cadaver dog, the divers are able
to pinpoint the location of the body to about a 20 - 30 foot area.
Recovering the body gives the family the chance for closure. It gives
the family peace of mind, and a chance to say good bye. This is why
Bear is so special. He is also a happy, friendly dog.
