Meet
Nelson - Shadagee Saints be Praised of LakeView, New York. He's
an sixteen month old Irish Setter seen here celebrating St. Patrick's day
2000. Nelson is a "singleton" - the only puppy in his
litter. He comes from a long line of show champions. It's not easy
living with a 90 pound puppy, but we're confident that our boy will
learn his own strength soon. Nelson is named after a Catholic priest
in our area who's on the fast track to sainthood. Fr. Nelson Baker
founded a home for wayward boys and impoverished families. We first
saw Nelson via sonogram on the day Fr. Baker was reinterred in the
bascilica he built - Our Lady of Victory. He became known as Nelson
that very day because he's our own little miracle.
On Saturday Nelson will be marching in the St. Pat's Parade in
Rochester, N.Y. - probably wearing the same costume as last year! He's
almost two years old now. Nelson went to live with a handler in
Michigan for a month and a half. During that time, he won his first
major, and is on his way to becoming a champion. He is very
large for an Irish Setter, and has a very rollicking
personality as Irish are supposed to have. He loves to sit in laps, is
a big cuddler, and has a huge appetite. He's horribly clumsy
and is known to bruise people easily because he doesn't know his own
strength. Nelson's favorite toy is a "jumball" - a giant
tennis ball - cause he's the only one around here who can open his
mouth wide enough to hold it. Out of the three Irish Setters we own,
Nelson is the most mellow as a puppy. Our experience is that the dogs
don't grow up until they are three, then settle down a little. But,
these are sporting dogs who need to run each and every day. If they
don't, that's when people say "God those dogs are hyper".
Let 'em run for a mile or two, and they're couch potatoes.
