Darby
O'Dublin Dot Corg is my very special companion. We picked him out
when he was two days old. His breeder was very generous to allow us to
pick him that early so as to rescue his beautiful tail from the vet's
knife-- as the official breed standard calls for docking the tail.
That's one reason we named him Darby which comes from the Irish and
means "free." (I looked for Welsh names, but I couldn't find one I
liked.)
For the first eight weeks of his life I took the hour drive to his
birthplace once a week to visit him. He was such a darling puppy! He
turned out to be the most active, mischievous pup in the litter of five.
The breeder thought there must be something extra onery in the tail. :o)
He has given us ten months of laughter and joy. He lives to fetch the
ball with anyone who will throw it for him, running and panting until he
is ready to drop. I take him to an elementary school with me where I
work as a school counselor. The kids line up for a chance to get to
throw the ball, laughing at his cute little legs, and big floppy ears.
He especially likes it when my husband throws it for him. When Papa
comes home from work, Darby runs to the back door and rings the bell,
expecting a chance to play.
Last week he took first place in the lowest division of the obedience
trials. (We're just starting out.) Except for one and a half points, the
points that we were docked were my fault, not his! He forgave me,
though, when I treated him to a cheeseburger.
