Rio
is six months (in the photo). Rio, named for the Portuguese word
for "river", is a wonder dog. We understand from reading
Portuguese Water Dog literature that this is not uncommon for the
breed. They are known to be super intelligent water dogs and
excellent all round pets. As you can see from Rio's intent stare, she
has already learned to focus on her parents and try to figure out what
we would like her to do. Here in the photo she is "stay"ing.
Rio also showed us from a really early age that she loves the water. I
could barely hold her in my lap on a peddle-boat ride when plop into
the water she jumped. She loved it! At night when we are brushing our
teeth, she sits by the bathroom door waiting for us to invite her to
"go to bed", which is right beside us on her comforter on
the floor. In the morning, she waits for the alarm to go off, which is
her signal that she can jump into bed with us for a cuddle before the
day begins.
Her favorite game is "hide and seek" where my husband Scott
gives her ball or Frisbee a toss and then runs and hides. Rio then
sniffs around until she finds him, sometimes in a closet or cupboard.
She doesn't stop until she finds him and then there are yelps of
happiness all around. Rio the wonder dog. Nuff said.
