Reuben
(this undeniably handsome fella) is 50% Basset Hound, 25%
Doberman, 25% Shepherd (no joke!). Reuben is a festival of cute habits
and interesting personality traits, not to mention the truly
handsome/bizarre appearance due to genetics. His hobbies include:
shaking hands, running around the coffee table, speaking like the
teacher in Charlie Brown cartoons, tearing apart all stuffed toys,
pretending to be a kangaroo, hiding purses, chasing the cat who allows
him to, being beaten by the cat who does not, and piling all household
pillows in the middle of the floor while home alone. Reuben is kind to
all other mammals, but is known to be quite irritable with flies and
rogue spiders. Unlike most dogs, he will not snatch any foods; he
prefers to nibble gently while you are not paying attention. Because
of his curious leg and paw structure, he is very dextrous. He can grab
and hold many things, and prefers to touch things with his paw rather
than to point at them with his nose.
Here is the sad part: I adopted Reuben from the SPCA on June 28, 2001,
and he had been there since March! Four months is a lot longer than they
keep most animals, but the staff felt he was very adoptable and bent the
rules. There's no indication as to why no one would adopt him, but I
suspect it is because of his quirky short legs. I asked the staff, and
they had no idea and said he was a staff and volunteer favorite who was
funny, sweet, and mellow even under the challenging kennel
circumstances. While I get angry at the thought that people were so
superficial, I also realize how lucky I am that no one wanted him until
I met him. From the day he walked into the house, he has been a total
and complete dream pet. He arrived totally housebroken, totally
adorable, and totally kind to pre-existing cats. He has never had any
destructive habits, he has never shown aggression, and he has never been
a disappointment. I am very fortunate to be so in love with this
amusing shortstuff. Reuben advises: Give mutants a chance!
