This
is my friend Rose. I adopted Rose just before my wife left on
a business project overseas, and Rose did an admirable job of keeping me
company, though she quickly adopted my wife on her return. She was the
fifth in a litter of six, and so is very svelte for a basset, weighing in at
only 35 pounds. Sadly, Rose's right eye recently had to be replaced with a
prosthesis due to glaucoma, a common problem for her breed. This photo
was taken before that operation. Since Rose has a powerful nose and
ears, she's not handicapped at all. On a typical day, Rose can be
found lolling in the sun or keeping our two cats in line. We couldn't
have asked for a better friend than this dog.
