Dixie Doodle, the Dog of the Day
Name: Dixie Doodle
Age: Eighteen months old
Gender: Female Breed: Lab, Whippet mix
Home: Ellicott City, Maryland, USA

This is a picture of Dixie at four months old on the day she was adopted from the Baltimore City SPCA. She was the only female left from an abandoned litter of nine, and even though she was the littlest one, she kept her five brothers at bay until she was finished eating. We thought she was a lab/Dalmatian mix, but as she grew, our vet told us she's mostly whippet. He said that would explain those ears!

She loves sticks and pine cones, prancing around like a show horse when she finds such a treasure. She also cries - practically sobs - whenever she gets a new toy. We have relatives who buy her toys just to watch her walk around with them and cry - it's funny stuff. Dixie is very sensitive, so we have to be careful about how we discipline her, or we'll upset her and she'll sulk. She took well to crate training, and runs into her crate as soon as she can tell we're getting ready to leave. (Or we can tell her to go to her room, and she runs in there.) She's a well behaved princess.

Dixie loves to hug her close people friends. She grabs us around the neck and snuggles, and tries to kiss us in our ears. She loves her new little brother Gilbert, a dachshund/Jack Russell mix with a curly tail from our local Animal Rescue. They've invented several "games" with rules that they take seriously, such as the one where they both growl and run around the dining room table, till Gilbert runs into the living room under a chair, at which point Dixie is to wait till he pops out and chases her around the table again. Must be more fun than it sounds, because they play it constantly. They are proof that the best way to get a new pet is adoption. Check the rescue organizations and animal shelters for your new life-long friends and save a life or two while you're at it!
