About Us
Sammy, the Dog of the Day
Name: Sammy
Age: Four years old
Gender: Male Breed: American Cocker Spaniel
Home: Lakeland, Florida, USA

Little Sammy is a rescue from our local SPCA and was really in a bad way when we adopted him. He had heartworm and was originally in the county shelter and was running out of time, on his third day when the SPCA director took him to her shelter. He was a stray that no one knew much about at all and the SPCA named him Kyle? Weird name for such a cutie pie so I changed it to Sammy Kyle! He was very skinny (nineteen pounds) when found him and although he had gained some weight (oooh up to a big 23 pounds) was still very thin when we adopted him.

He also had a terrible infection from his neuter job and because of all of this he was being ignored by potential families even though he was so handsome. He was quiet, shy and well, really frightened in the kennel, so we got them to let us take him to the outdoor play area. He was sooooo happy to be out of that jail but still a bit timid.

I was not sure at first and waited a week to think about it and it was the longest week of my life because of the SPCA hours I could not get back until the following weekend. I was there when they opened the doors on March 2, 2002 because I had really came to the conclusion if we did not take him he would surely die. This was all a hard pill to swallow for my husband but he agreed and the SPCA was willing to help get treatment for his heartworm which is very expensive. We also opted to pay the difference and get the better of the two drugs used to make sure that we took care of this once and for all!

Instant love just add Sammy, you know all those instant this and instant? That's our Sammy! We found instant love with our four-legged little friend. He immediate took to me and we bonded like we were always meant to be. Sammy was quiet and shy and afraid the first two weeks of living with us and then it was as if someone flipped a switch all of a sudden he was feeling better and playing and snuggling. This dog is everything good ever written about American Cocker Spaniels. He is merry and protective and loving and loyal.

When I travel on business he waits by the door for me. And while I am his favorite human, Sorry dear, he is warming up very much to the "Daddy" in the house. He follows me everywhere, loves to ride in the car and sometimes will sneak out into the garage while I am "packing" up the car to go to work and there he is planted on the back seat ready to go! I literally have to bribe him to get out and it does not always work! Sometimes we have to scoop him up and carry him back in the house!

He loves everyone and everything, his "wag-o-meter" is always going full blast! He is quite the frog hunter also he loves to chase 'em, lick 'em and in general wants one as a pet! We insist that all real froggies must stay outside where there are plenty o critters for them to eat.
