Jake
was born in Lancaster County on Amish Farmland. He has three
sisters and one brother. Jake is always prepared for a game of "tennis
ball keep-a-way". However, we must use at least three balls because Jake
likes to tease us by making it very hard for us to wrestle away the two
balls that he can carry (at one time) in his mouth. Jake is very quick
and agile and almost impossible to catch unless he surrenders on purpose
because he is tired. Luckily, he will usually drop those two balls
and pursue the "ball-in-play", thereby, always keeping the game alive.
Jake is an excellent watchdog. He barks very loudly whenever anyone
comes near the door (including us). Jake is a great alarm clock... and
wakes the family up at 5:00 am every morning. His sense of time is
unbelievable. He has a routine and knows when everybody is coming home
from wherever they went. Jake loves his car rides and sits very nice in
the rear seat watching the world go by. He only barks when someone
approaches the car. He loves his walks in the park, but he really wishes
we would let him chase the squirrels.
Jake has really become one of the kids and involves himself in
everything! He helps me fix things around the yard and house by keeping
me company. He looks forward to jumping up onto our beds and laying down
"for a pet". He insists on poking his big head into every shopping bag
after a trip to the supermarket... looking for a box of treats or a new
toy that he always gets. And when we open the refrigerator, guess who
has to check out what's in there? He likes to sit on my wife's lap...
even though he weighs over 100 pounds!
Jake is very gabby and expresses his feelings with an
interesting mixture of head tilts, funny growls, whines, yaps, and
gurgles whenever he is impatient. We sometimes are amazed at the variety
of sounds he can produce. He seems to understand everything we say to
him, and because of that, we always talk to him as if he were another
human being.
