Buddy, the Dog of the Day
Name: Buddy
Age: Seven and a half years old
Gender: Male Breed: Collie, Shepherd mix
Home: South Riding, Virginia, USA

Buddy is my first dog. I had wanted a dog since I was a little boy, but my parents would never let me have one. Less than a week after moving out of an apartment and into my first home, I brought Buddy home from the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. I had lived for two years just blocks from the animal shelter, but I knew that my one bedroom apartment wasn't big enough for a dog. As soon as I knew that I was moving, I started researching breeds and had decided that I wanted either a Collie or a Lab. I found Buddy on my second visit to the shelter, and I knew that he was the right dog for me. As I filled out the paperwork to take him home, I realized that I had nothing ready for him. We stopped by the pet store to get a collar, leash, toys, and food before going home. We bonded right away. He was just a year and a half old. That was six years ago.

It seems like Buddy is always on my mind. He is up before the sun and takes me on a twenty minute walk around the community. He loves to look for rabbits, cats, and squirrels. After breakfast, he knows it is time for me to go to work. He runs downstairs and waits for me on his pillow. At the end of the work day, I get excited to know that I am going home to Buddy. I know that he will be there to greet me at the door. His tail will be wagging, and he will be ready for another long walk around the community and to the mailbox. A little fun before and after dinner, then one last trip outside before heading off to bed.

Buddy always knows how to make me smile and laugh. As he gets older, he doesn't play with the toys as much, but we still manage to have fun. It is a lot of work and responsibility taking care of a dog like Buddy, but it has been worth it. Buddy is the best dog ever!
