Tucker, the Dog of the Day
Name: Tucker
Age: Seven months old
Gender: Male Breed: English Bulldog
Home: Rosedale, Maryland, USA

Tucker is a purebred bulldog that, after hundreds of hours of research, I purchased from a breeder in Missouri. I always liked Bulldogs. They have a unique appearance that sets them apart from all other breeds. But I never knew how much work they could be!

Tucker is an exceptionally stubborn little beast. But with that stubbornness comes a complement of personality that is undeniable charming. Tucker thinks he rules the roost, but he has a soft side that compels him to snuggle in close to us when he sleeps. He has his favorite spot on the couch and on my bed too! Tucker greets my wife and I when we return from work by ritual of wagging his head one way while the butt wags in the opposite direction. Because bulldogs have no extruding tails, the entire rear end must compensate. It's funny to watch. Tucker is extremely submissive. Some people are intimidated by his looks (although I don't know how this is possible), but as soon as they see Tucker slithering up them on his belly and turning over so they will rub him, he's an immediate hit, and any concern about aggression is assuaged.

Tucker is beginning to find his protective instinct. He has a half-howl, half-bark going on that is adorable. He's starting to exercise this new found ability quite frequently. As mentioned, Tucker can be stubborn, but when food is involved, he is a student of unequal measure. With just a couple of treats, he picked up on sit, speak, give paw, down, and roll over in just a few days. When he speaks, Tucker looks like he is talking back to you, his jaw moves rapidly with animated head movements and series of grunts and growls that follow, sounding nothing like full barks. Sometimes, it's like watching a kung-fu movie with subtitles. It's something you must see for yourself.

All in all, Tucker is a prize and wonderful companion. Almost everyone that sees him stops to pet and play with him. Even the most dispassionate non-animal people melt when Tucker is around.
