Lucy
is a Jack Russell Terrier who turned three years old on January 5th.
Like most JRT's Lucy is a very active dog! What makes Lucy a bit unusual
is that she is a blind, very busy dog! In September 2004, at just 2 1/2
years old, Lucy went totally blind overnight from something called SARDS
(Suddenly Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome) with no treatment
available, and no known cause. We felt so sorry for Lucy, but realized
after just a few days that Lucy certainly wasn't going to waste any time
feeling sorry for herself! She quickly learned to "map out" our home,
back yard, off-leash dog park ... and still walks, and even runs with most
of the confidence she's always had! She learned to run again with the
dogs at the dog park by staying on the inside of the group, and listens
to their dog tags to know where they are, and what direction to take.
One of her favorite things to do when she still had her sight was to
watch recorded dog agility shows on TV. Amazingly, she still even does
that, by watching the shows with her ears! Lucy now has her own web site
at Blind Dogs.net where you can see
pictures of her "watching TV" as well as sharing her own story, and
those of other blind dogs to let people know what happy and fulfilled
lives blind dogs can still have!
