Meet
Murphy, folks. He is quite a character. His "biological" daddy,
Reilly, is consistently top ranked in the SRS (Super Retriever Series)
for dock jumping. At least once a week, we head to the lake for some
fun. When I grab the ball at the house, and head for the car, he gets
this excitement about him that I cannot explain. The closer we get
towards the lake I can see that he's getting more and more anxious in
the backseat. Once we arrive, I know he's ready to go. I don't know if
it's genes or not, but he'll run and absolutely fly off the dock after a
tennis ball. Sometimes we'll throw sinkable objects in about five feet
of water. He'll mark where it sinks, and swim out to the area. He'll
swim in circles for a short time, and then head right down to retrieve
it. Sometimes he'll be underwater for over ten seconds. Friends of
mine that have licensed K-9's say that only 5% of dogs will go
underwater. I haven't told Murphy that yet because I don't won't it to
go to his head.
In the summer at the lake, he likes to swim around all of us while we're
out in our rafts. Sometimes he'll cruise around for at least 30 minutes
and not even be tired. Aside from a few mishaps when he was a puppy,
he's been the best little boy. One time he ate a stick of butter and
half of a key lime cheesecake. Poor little guy spent most of the next
two days in the woods. It holds true, Labs will eat anything.
He love's everyone, but is very protective of his family. When dad's
away on business or pleasure, he sometimes takes trips with the
grandparents in the RV. They like having him around, and say he's
much easier to handle than the real ones.
