Jack, the Dog of the Day
Name: Jack
Age: One year old
Gender: Male Breed: Yellow Lab mix
Home: St. Louis, Missouri, USA

This is Jack Elder aka Jack-a-roo, Jack Attack, and Action Jackson. He's just four months old in this picture.

His dad and I went to the Humane Shelter to "look at" puppies the week before my college graduation. Jack's dad, Bill, fell in love with him at first sight. He was the runt of his litter (seven pounds at eight weeks). His mom was a Lab and Husky, and dad was St. Bernard and Shepherd. Most of his siblings were Husky-dominated and therefore picked on the little Jack. We watched their cage as his litter mates pushed Jack out of the way when he tried to get food and even water! It was so sad. Bill wanted to "save" Jack and take him home right then... so we did! We could easily tell how exhausted the shelter made him: all he did for the first two days was eat, sleep, and go to the bathroom. Lucky for us, he never barked (the Shepherd in him) and was potty-trained in one week! My friends and I were all amazed at what a good puppy he was being!

By six months old, he was 60 pounds. He is full of life and energy. He loves swimming in the lake at the park, he chases and chews sticks like it's his job, and he is in constant need of love. He will nuzzle and snuggle anyone who lets him. He is extremely smart with his training and is so gentle with other dogs. He never misses the opportunity to take naps with Bill, me, or our roommates. But we have to be careful because he's a bed hog. He still thinks he's seven pounds and always pushes against the wall and sometimes knocks us off the bed! It's a riot!! He always makes us laugh with his unique personality and funny facial expressions.

We couldn't have asked for a better mix, either. He has the sleek look of the Lab and loves to swim. He has gorgeous Husky eyes. He's gentle, loving, and big like the St. Bernard. And even at his rowdy puppy stage, he still never barks, like a Shepherd. He is by far the best dog and the perfect match for our family!! We just love him to death!
