This
is Buzz, the world's most perfect dog. He'd been found by the side
of the road in Mississippi and rescued by Guardian Angel Pet Rescue of
Memphis, who fostered him for several months. One rainy day I was
minding my own business, going to Petco to get some kitty litter. I saw
a woman in there with a dog on a leash, and I was just so drawn to this
dog. I went over to her and then saw the pet adoption area, set up
inside the store due to the rain. She said the dog was up for adoption
and that I could pet him -- but the dog didn't pay much attention to
me, he was looking for the woman's husband, there with another dog. I
got my kitty litter, came back to pet the dog some more (who continued
to ignore me), and talked to the woman about adopting him. It had been
20 years or more since I'd had a dog, I've been a cat person for a long
time, but there was just something about this dog. Three days later he
was mine.
What a great decision! I've been reading up on rat terriers since I
adopted him and Buzz displays all the breed traits. He loves to be with
you, preferably on your lap with you petting or scratching him. He's an
avid rodent hunter, and you really don't want to be a slow bird, either,
he's sort of an equal opportunity hunter. He loves being warm,
stretched out in the sun or snuggled up to me. He's very playful and
you can get him pretty wound up, but he settles down quickly too. He's
rather be with me than eat, he's definitely a house dog and wouldn't do
well kept outdoors. I often work from home and that works well; Buzz
stays at my feet or in my lap while I work at the computer. Seventeen
pounds of dog is a little much for my lap but we find a way to make it
work. He also likes to stand on my lap and look out the window,
searching for prey.
Buzz is pretty good with my cats, who were quite shocked the day I came
in the door with him. Ritzy, the Burmese, still thinks I made a really
bad decision and remains disgusted by all of Buzz's dogness. Cruise,
the Abyssinian, is pretty dog-like himself and lets Buzz chase him.
Buzz isn't possessive of his food and he and Cruise will share a plate
together, both heads in there, although Buzz is much more effective than
Cruise and gets the larger share. Buzz has learned that when Cruise
makes a funny kind of noise that there's something interesting to look
at out the window, and will come running over to see what it is. At
first Cruise was frightened by that but now he knows that Buzz isn't
after him.
Buzz's favorite thing is when I take him out to the barn where I board
my horses. He has no horse sense so I have to be careful of him when
the horses are out, but there are several pastures with no horses where
Buzz gets to run and run and run. He stays within about 100 yards of me,
looking for rodents and chasing any bird he finds, including Canadian
geese. That's the terrier in him, chasing something so much bigger, but
the geese decided he was too much for them and flew away.
That's my Buzz!
